Wells + Associates Receives National Award for Excellence in Transportation Demand Management from ACT

W+A Recognized Among Industry Leaders at Trade Conference in Denver

Tysons, VA — Wells + Associates recently accepted the Excellence in Research Award at the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) 38th Annual International Conference in Denver, Colorado. The award was one of 13 distributed at the association’s 2024 ACT National Awards, which honor those performing exemplary work in Transportation Demand Management (TDM).

The award was granted for our firm’s white paper, “Don’t Underestimate Your Property: Forecasting Trips and Managing Density Over the Long Term in Fairfax County, Virginia.” Other winners included individuals and organizations committed to improving commuter and community mobility to create a better journey for all.

“TDM professionals work hard each day to provide reliable and equitable transportation options in their communities. Too many go unrecognized, and ACT is committed to uplifting the significant impact they’ve made,” said David McMaster, President of ACT. “Congratulations to these winners for leading the field forward by example!”

Additional awardees included:

  • Arise Collective
  • Audrey DeBarros
  • Black Girls Do Bike: Raleigh Durham
  • Denver International Airport
  • goDCgo
  • Flip Your Trip West Seattle, Seattle Dept of Transportation
  • Gateway @ Millbrae Station
  • Houston METRO Transit Authority, METRO Star Vanpool Services
  • Mary Anderson
  • Northeast Transportation Connections (NETC)
  • University of Minnesota Twin Cities

W+A’s research made clear what our TDM team already knew: that TDM was reducing traffic at our Fairfax County, Virginia, properties, and that our clients met their proferred requirements year after year. The key findings of the research are that 1) properties with TDM programs were achieving twice the amount of trip reduction as they were required to, and 2) Fairfax County’s urbanization and transportation-oriented development efforts had created synergies with the TDM trip reduction proffers, making the combined policies more successful than the county had anticipated.

“A successful TDM initiative addresses transportation challenges and establishes the groundwork for more accessible and efficient travel,” said David Straus, Executive Director of the Association for Commuter Transportation. “Our 2024 winners have done just that and have made a measurable impact on the commutes, mobility, and quality of life of those around them. Each one has driven outstanding achievement in the field that we are truly proud to celebrate.”
